Error description

  • A guest issued an SPXTAPE command. During the rewind of the
tape an HTT001 abend occurred because the issuer had logged off.
When the response to the rewind was received, HCPIOS referred
to a VMDBK that no longer existed leading to the HTT001 ABEND.

ABENDHTT001 when a hardware issue hangs a tape disposition I/O
operation (REWIND, REW and UNLOAD) to a tape drive at the end of
an SPXTAPE command's processing. All other processing for the
command can complete prior to the disposition operation which is
running asynchronously. This frees up the user to logoff even
though that last operation remains outstanding because of the
hang. Eventually the missing interrupt handler (MIH) detects
the hang and the HTT001 abend can occur if the missing interrupt
handler tries to access the VMDBK of the command issuer which
has been released due to the logoff.

Problem conclusion

  • The SPXTAPE command issuer's deferred work count (VMDDFRWK) is
incremented just before the tape disposition operation is
started and decremented when the operation completes. This
guarantees that the deferred work count is non-zero across the
I/O operation and prevents the user from logging off.
