APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • x/DR requires an SVMR record on state changes for PPRC devices.
When receiving the record they will issue a QUERY dev command.
This could cause Hyperswap Quiesce or Swap phases to time-out.
The reason is is because the Proxy has Class G privileges and
VM will attempt to process this as QUERY userid first. This
may cause a page read on the user directory and the paging
device could be quiesced at this point.

Local fix

  • Give the Proxy all privilege classes.

    * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF                                    *
    ****************************************************************
An SVMR record is created for state changes on PPRC devices.
When x/DR receives the record it will issue a "QUERY dev".
If the virtual machine has only class G privileges z/VM
will first check if the parameter following the QUERY is a
userid. If this occurs during a Hyperswap this could cause
a page read to occur on the user directory which exists on
a Quiesced device. This can result in the Quiesce or Swap
phases of the HS to time-out, causing the HS to fail.

Problem conclusion

  • z/VM will only supply SVMR records for state changes when the
PPRC device is online now. SA MP will no longer need to issue
the CP QUERY rdev command to determine if the device is offline.
They will be removing that code with their fix. With both APARs
applied the time-outs will no longer occur.
This APAR MUST be applied in conjunction with SA MP APAR IV41211
