Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: VSWITCH or Guest LAN users exploiting IPv6 *
    * in IP Layer (Layer 3) mode could be affected *
    * if they attempt to use VIPA or IP Takeover. *
    * Note that this does NOT affect users *
    *                 exploiting IPv6 in ETHERNET (Layer 2) mode.  *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The VM user was running z/OS in the *
    * guest (a Linux guest would have had the *
    * same problem). The network interface *
    * was configured using a virtual NIC *
    * coupled to a Guest LAN (HiperSockets in *
    * this case, but the results would have *
    * been the same for type QDIO). The *
    * Guest LAN was defined as an IP network *
    * (Layer 3) and the interface was defined *
    * for IPv6 with IP Takeover. When two *
    *                      conflicting IPv6 addresses were defined *
    * in the local (internal) LAN segment, *
    * SETIP failed with error E005 (which was *
    * unexpected). IP Takeover options *
    * should have prevented this error *
    *                      condition.                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF                                    *
    ****************************************************************
    To configure an IP Layer HiperSockets (or OSA Express)
    connection for IP Takeover (or VIPA) the guest device driver
    sets a special flag on the SETIP request. The original support
    for virtual NIC simulation provides support for these flags to
    control ARP simulation for IPv4 addresses. It did NOT recognize
    these flags for IPv6 address requests. Therefore, IPv6 SETIP
    requests were processed as if none of these flags were set.

Problem conclusion

  • SETIP simulation (found in HCPIPN) is updated to provide support
    for IPv6 address processing. This addresses the problem for
    HiperSockets as well as QDIO (OSA Express) simulation. This
    APAR should be applied to allow IP Takeover and VIPA processing
    for IPv6 addresses within a Guest LAN or VSWITCH network.
