Error description
Additional updates for SMAPI for z/VM 6.2.0.
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of the z/VM System Management * * Application Programming Interface (SMAPI) * * including zEnterprise environments when * * managed by the Unified Resource Manager. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF * **************************************************************** This APAR addresses several problems with z/VM System Management Application Programming (SMAPI) in z/VM 6.2.0: 1. When SMAPI Logging is active, more information in the LOGs would aid in the problem determination process. 2. SMAPI Logs often wrap before a problem might be noticed with one of the SMAPI servers. 3. The data cache maintained by LOHCOST may become corrupt if an attempt is made to cache a directory entry that is extraordinarily large, or the size of the directory cache exceeds the capacity of the LOHCOST data disk.. 4. A shutdown and subsequent restart of LOHCOST may not wait long enough for the successful shutdown before attempting a restart, resulting in a Logoff/Force pending error. 5. The Image_Deactivate API may issue a "DMSOPN062E Invalid character | in fileid | MODULE" error.
Problem conclusion
APAR VM65162 is a collection of several updates to the z/VM System Management Application Programming (SMAPI) function. Included in this APAR are the following corrections: 1. The logging placed in the VSMAPI LOGx files will now include the name of the SMAPI server where the process writing to the log file is running. Additionally, several new logging entries are now created related to Event subscriptions. 2. If a SMAPI server should fail (forced to re-IPL) for any reason, the SMAPI LOGs will automatically be saved to the directory defined by the Server_DATA value in DMSSICNF COPY (the default is VMSYS:VSMWORK.DATA). Up to 2 sets of SMAPI logs will be preserved, with a new set replacing the oldest set, if necessary. The saved logs will use the naming convention of VSMAPI SVxLOGx. 3. LOHCOST routines have been updated to handle exceptionally large user entries, and to prevent loading data that would cause the data cache to exceed the storage space available for the cache. If the cache becomes too large, entries that have not been referenced for the longest period of time will be purged from the cache to make room for newer entries. 4. LOHCOST routines have been updated to monitor the progress of the termination and startup of LOHCOST to ensure processing does not proceed to the next step until it is appropriate. 5. The Image_Deactivate API code has been updated to fix a broken Pipeline. ********* * NOTE: * ********* After APAR VM65162 is installed, the following steps should be performed: 1. Stop LOHCOST be issuing "CP SIGNAL SHUTDOWN LOHCOST". Then wait for a response that this has completed successfully. 2. Stop and restart SMAPI by issuing "CP FORCE VSMGUARD" followed by "CP XAUTOLOG VSMGUARD". Alternatively, z/VM can be restarted after APAR VM65162 is installed.
