Error description
The READ verb hangs after 8192 records. The input file is defined as LINE SEQUENTIAL but the data is not a legal LINE SEQUENTIAL file. It lacks \n new line bytes at the end of each record. The new line is hex 0A. The problem probably started with COBOL for AIX 4.1.1.0 (definately with 4.1.1.4).
Local fix
Revert the compiler and runtime to version 4.1.0.0. Type the command $ lslpp -l cobol* to be sure.
Problem summary
Loop or hang when reading 8191 or 8192 records.
