Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All DB2 V9 and V10 users. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: DB2 ABEND04E RSN00D94001 after batch * * job ABEND322 resulting in ABEND13E * * while in DSNSVBK. The recovery FRR * * failed to restore integrity to the * * pool free chains and length values, * * such that the thread ABEND0C4s in * * DSNSVBK during MUST COMPLETE cleanup * * processing. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** DB2 system terminates when the MUST COMPLETE thread abort termination processing receives an ABEND0C4 trying to free storage in a pool which had earlier been used by a timed out batch job. The batch job was processing in DSNSVBK when the detach occurred during variable pool chain manipulation, leaving the chains corrupted. The FRR attempted to restore integrity to the pool unsuccessfully and DB2 continued abort termination. During that process, an attempt was made to free the aborted thread's storage, resulting in ABEND0C4 in DSNSVBK which brought DB2 down since this was MUST COMPLETE. This problem may occur for any type of MVS CANCEL or ABENDx22 timeout depending on where the execution is at that point.
Problem conclusion
The tracking and recovery code in the 31bit variable pool storage code and its FRR has been reworked to provide the necessary information for proper recovery. New tracking information is added while manipulating the variable chains such that order can be restored if the thread is hit by MVS CANCEL, TIMEOUT ABENDx22, or other MVS abend.
