Error description

  • When customer creates a message on a data entry queue, in the
destination address field they type in the first 8 characters
only. MERVA fills the remaining characters on positions 9 to 12
with "X". When they inadvertently type in more than 8
characters, they complain that now, for some correspondents,
position 9 of the destination address contains another character
than "X", for example, "A" or "B". They observe this after the
migration to the SWIFT SAA environment. SAA sends this message
to the SWIFTNet, and SWIFT returns the negative acknowledgment
(NAK) H99. Then they have to manually override the invalid
character on position 9 by an "X" and pass the corrected message
to SAA which again sends the message to the SWIFTNet. Now SWIFT
    returns a positive acknowledgment (ACK).

    ****************************************************************
The destination address in the application header of a SWIFT
input message contains an invalid character on position 9.
    SWIFT returns a H99 NAK.

Problem conclusion

  • For each message type except 074, character X is set on
position 9 of the destination address.
For message type 074 (broadcast), the destination address is
SWHQBEBB*BCT. The character on position 9, indicated by an
    asterisk, depends on the application:
o For a FIN broadcast, character X is set.
o For a General Purpose Application (GPA) broadcast,
      character A is set.
