Local fix

Problem summary

  • The "Preserving NTFS ACLs when copying a VOB or view storage
directory" section of the ClearCase Administrator's Guide
(page 204 for 7.0 or page 257 for 2003.06.00) currently
    says:
"In most cases, you can use the ccopy utility
(ccase?home?dir\etc\utils\ccopy) when copying a VOB or view
storage directory. Although ccopy copies all of the
necessary ACL information, it does not copy the full
security descriptor of an object, and therefore effectively
grants the user who runs it full access to the copied
directory. If someone other than the VOB or view owner is
copying a VOB or view storage directory, it may be more
appropriate to use xcopy /o or, on Windows NT, scopy
    instead.
On Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you can use xcopy with the /o
    option.
Because Windows 2000 and Windows XP allow a directory to
inherit ACLs from its parent directory, the copied directory
may inherit some entries from the ACL of its parent
directory, which can cause problems with VOB and view
    access."
While "xcopy /o" is enough to preserve a file's ACLs, it
cannot preserve the file's read-only attribute. As a result,
when checkvob is run aginst a VOB storage directory copied
with "xcopy /o", it reports misprotected source containers.
The solution to this problem is to use "xcopy /o /k". The
"/k" option ensures that the VOB storage files' read-only
    attributes are preserved.

Problem conclusion

  • The "Preserving NTFS ACLs when copying a VOB or view storage
directory" section on p. 204 of the ClearCase
Administrator's Guide (v7.0) now recommends using "xcopy /o
    /k" rather than "xcopy /o".
The revised content will appear in a future version of the
    ClearCase Administrator's Guide.
