Error description

  • Users of Enterprise COBOL Vx.x compiling programs at OPT(1|2)
    and ARCH(10) or higher that compare a PACKED-DECIMAL or USAGE
    DISPLAY data item to another numeric data item, with the
    PACKED-DECIMAL or USAGE DISPLAY data item containing invalid
    digits or an invalid sign code may experience an ABEND0C7 at
    runtime.

Local fix

  • Compile at OPT(0) or ARCH(9) or below

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V6.2 compiling *
    * programs and running programs that contain *
    *                 comparisons of a PACKED-DECIMAL or USAGE     *
    * DISPLAY data item to another numeric data *
    * item, with the PACKED-DECIMAL or USAGE *
    * DISPLAY data item containing invalid digits *
    * or an invalid sign code, Compiling with *
    *                 OPT(1|2) and ARCH(10) or higher and          *
    *                 ZONEDATA(NOPFD) should tolerate the invalid  *
    * data, but it does not. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ABEND at runtime: The program ABENDs *
    *                      with a S0C7.  This is different from    *
    * COBOL V4 and earlier, so this is a *
    *                      migration issue.                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF and compile with *
    *                 ZONEDATA(NOPFD) or ZONEDATA(MIG). Use        *
    *                 ZONEDATA(MIG) if you used NUMPROC(MIG) in    *
    *                 COBOL V4/earlier; otherwise, use             *
    *                 ZONEDATA(NOPFD).                             *
    ****************************************************************
    The compiler generates more optimal code that sometimes
    converts PACKED-DECIMAL or USAGE DISPLAY data to decimal
    floating point before comparing. Conversions to decimal
    floating point don't tolerate invalid digits or sign codes, so
    an S0C7 data exception may occur.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to not generate decimal floating point
    compares of USAGE DISPLAY or PACKED-DECIMAL data when compiling
    with ZONEDATA(NOPFD) or ZONEDATA(MIG).
