APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When an assembler program does a load and balr to a COBOL V6
(or V5) program multiple times, an exception occurs after the
second instance upon return to the assembler's caller. The dsa
of the assembler's caller is being reused and overlaid. This
only occurs when using LE run-time option RTEREUS .

Local fix

  • Do not use RTEREUS.

When RTEREUS is active, the COBOL runtime must keep track of
the state of the LE environment to keep it active but dormant
when the main COBOL program returns control to the caller. The
state information got out of sync when an V5+ program is
introduced to the running environment, causing an overlay to
the stack storage used by the main program.

Problem conclusion

  • The COBOL runtime has been corrected to work properly for this
    scenario.
