Error description
With Enterprise COBOL V5, the Working Storage section of a COBOL program is now included into the Writable Static Area (WSA). When linking several programs together, the size of the WSA can become very large. This may result in very high overhead during initialization.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 5.1 compiling and * * running programs using the DATA(31) and DLL * * compiler options where the programs call out * * to other COBOL programs that are linked * * together in a large DLL of routines (Dynamic * * Link Library). * * * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Runtime performance of COBOL * * applications matching the above profile * * are slower than similar applications * * compiled with earlier Enterprise COBOL * * compilers. * * * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. * * * **************************************************************** In Enterprise COBOL V5, when DATA(31) is in effect, data items in WORKING-STORAGE are stored in an area called the 'writable static area' (WSA). When the WSA is initialized, the initialization is performed for all the programs linked together, even when only one of the programs is being called. This can often result in unnecessary initialization overhead at runtime.
Problem conclusion
A new compiler option, WSOPT, was added to the compiler. When this option is specified, the compiler and COBOL runtime handle WORKING-STORAGE in a manner that is similar to earlier Enterprise COBOL compilers. In particular, the WORKING-STORAGE memory is handled in a more dynamic and granular fashion so that the initialization of WORKING-STORAGE is done only for the program that is being called and not for all the programs with which that program is linked.
