  *                 data items of zero length.                   *

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Incorrect output.  IF NUMERIC class     *
  *                      test on variable-length data items of   *
  *                      zero length results in a true           *
  *                      condition. The result should be a false *
  *                      condition.                              *

  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply provided service.                      *

  The size of variable-length data item is determined at program
  run time and zero length is a special case, instead of applying
  the usual test on the data item, a predetermined result should
  be returned for zero length.
  

Problem conclusion

• The COBOL Version 5 library is changed so that a NUMERIC class
  test on a variable-length data item of zero length results in
  false condition.
