Error description
As currently delivered, the compiler proc does not specify the LRECL or BLKSIZE for the SYSLIN ddname in the COBOL step. However, users may choose to specify those values. The compiler should force LRECL=80 for the SYSLIN object output if the customer did not specify an LRECL for SYSLIN in his JCL. When DISP=NEW or DISP=SHR are used on the SYSLIN ddname in the compile step, and the BLKSIZE parameter is specified without the LRECL, then the compiler incorrectly changes the LRECL to match the specified BLKSIZE, which then causes the binder to abend. When DISP is left of entirely or DISP=MOD is used on the SYSLIN ddname in the compile step, and the BLKSIZE parameter is specified without the LRECL, then the compiler correctly sets the LRECL to 80 and uses whatever BLKSIZE is specified. This is OK. When DISP is left off entirely on the SYSLIN ddname, and BLKSIZE is not specified, then the compiler correctly sets the LRECL to 80 and sets the BLKSIZE to 6080. This is OK.
Local fix
Do not specify either the LRECL or the BLKSIZE parameter on the SYSLIN ddname in the compile step.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 5.1 compiling * * programs using JCL that points to a NEW * * output SYSLIN dataset, but does not specify * * an LRECL in the SYSLIN DD definition. * * * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The compiler created a dataset with * * LRECL not = 80, which caused the * * program management binder to fail. * * * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. * * * **************************************************************** Since the compiler was not supplying an LRECL for SYSLIN, it used the user-specified BLKSZE for the LRECL, which resulted in a SYSLIN dataset with LRECL not equal to 80. The binder can only process SYSLIN datasets with LRECL=80.
Problem conclusion
The compiler was changed to specify LRECL=80 if an LRECL was not specified for the SYSLIN DD definition.
