Error description
Enterprise COBOL 4.x compiler output (SYSPRINT) is directed to a PDSE dataset. If the PDSE is full, the compile receives IEC032I E37-04 for SYSPRINT and goes into a loop instead of ending immediately. (A full PDSE exceeds the maximum of around 120 extents.) ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS: There is an abend0c4 following the X37 full errors if SYSPRINT is a PDS or flat QSAM file. The same problem may occur with other full system files, such as SYSLIN, SYSDEBUG and SYSADATA.
Local fix
Give the SYSPRINT or other full dataset more space. NOTE: Enterprise COBOL 3.4 and earlier did not fail with the loop or the abend0C4, but the compilation terminated when an AbendX37 failure occured. Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5 compiler with * * SYSPRINT, SYSLIN, SYSLMOD or SYSADATA * * datasets that run out of space during * * compilation. * * * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: If dataset is a full PDSE, the compile * * step gets message IEC032I E37-04, goes * * into a loop and then gets ABEND S322 * * instead of D37 and ending immediately. * * * * If dataset is a PDS or flat QSAM file, * * there is an ABEND0C4 following the X37 * * full errors. * * * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. * * * **************************************************************** The compiler was sharing an OPEN exit between the new SYSOPTF and other compiler files. The SYSOPTF OPEN exit had a flag set for 'do not ABEND' which caused the loop.
Problem conclusion
IGYVCNTL was changed to have a separate OPEN exit for SYSOPTF, and to use the standard OPEN exit for other system output files.
