PH63139: IGYRC5108-U COBOL COMPILER TERMINATING... ABENDS0C4 WITH THE COMPILER IN THE LINKLIST OR APF AUTHORIZED

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• The compiler is inadvertently updating itself, leading to an 0C4
  
  abend if the compiler is loaded in store protected memory as is
  the case when the compiler is linklisted or APF authorized.
  
  In addition to the IGYRC5108-U message, there's a display like
  
  PROGRAM CHECK, INTERRUPT CODE 04

  to be seen, where the LAST MODULE may also be some other
  compiler module.
  
  The resolution will address the problem reported in APAR PH63108
  
  for COBOL 6.3, as well as additional similar problems in 6.4.

• Unless the compiler is APF authorized, access the compiler using
  
  STEPLIB

  A piece of memory in the compiler's CSECT was being
  inadvertently written to during the processing of alphanumeric
  BY CONTENT arguments in CALL statements. While the write did not
  harm the memory, in some environments, the write to the
  compiler's own CSECT memory can fail with a S0C4 abend.
  

Problem conclusion

• The compiler was updated to correct the inadvertent write to the
  compiler's CSECT memory.
