Error description
The compiler is inadvertently updating itself, leading to an 0C4 abend if the compiler is loaded in store protected memory as is the case when the compiler is linklisted or APF authorized. In addition to the IGYRC5108-U message, there's a display like PROGRAM CHECK, INTERRUPT CODE 04 PSW 078D1F00 A263E6B0 REGISTERS 0 - 15: ... CURRENT COBOL COMPILER PHASE: IGYCPGEN (STORAGE LOC: A25526E8) LAST MODULE RECORDING CONTROL: IGYPTEMP (STORAGE LOC: 2263E480) INTERRUPT OCCURRED AT STORAGE LOCATION: 0063E6AC to be seen, where the LAST MODULE may also be some other compiler module.
Local fix
Unless the compiler is APF authorized, access the compiler using STEPLIB
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 who have their * * compiler APF authorized or located in the * * linklist or LPA and are compiling programs * * that pass an alphanumeric argument in a CALL * * statement BY CONTENT. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Compiler abort with message: * * * * PROGRAM CHECK, INTERRUPT CODE 04 * * PSW 078D1F00 CA88D6B0 * * REGISTERS 0 - 15: * * : * * CURRENT COBOL COMPILER PHASE: * * IGYCPGEN (STORAGE LOC: CA46E6E8) * * LAST MODULE RECORDING CONTROL: * * IGYPTEMP (STORAGE LOC: 4A88D480) * * INTERRUPT OCCURRED AT STORAGE * * LOCATION: 0088D6AC * * CURRENT LINE NUMBER: 000078 * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF * **************************************************************** A piece of memory in the compiler's CSECT was being inadvertently written to during the processing of alphanumeric BY CONTENT arguments in CALL statements. While the write did not harm the memory, in some environments, the write to the compiler's own CSECT memory can fail with a S0C4 abend.
Problem conclusion
The compiler was updated to correct the inadvertent write to the compiler's CSECT memory.
