Error description
Version 6.3 introduced the Configuration Section-Repository definition for Intrinsic functions (the ?Function All Intrinsic?) to eliminate the need to specify the keyword "FUNCTION" on calls to the intrinsic functions. However, in COBOL V6.3 and V6.4, there is a problem in the processing of the LENGTH function combined with the TRIM function when using the Repository definition inside table entries (OCCURS clause).
Local fix
BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION: None RECOVERY ACTION: Apply PTF
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Enterprise COBOL V6.3 users who add the new * * REPOSITORY section for using intrinsic * * functions without the keyword FUNCTION and * * have programs with the LENGTH function with * * a function invocation as the function * * argument AND the function argument has * * subscripting * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Incorrect results due to bad generated * * code for the subscripting * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF and recompile * **************************************************************** In order to support using the LENGTH function without the keyword function, the compiler has to look forward to see if we are processing the LENGTH function or the LENGTH OF register. The compiler was not resetting some information when it changed from processing LENGTH OF to processing function LENGTH.
Problem conclusion
The compiler was changed to properly reset the internal subscripting environment when a left parenthesis is encountered after finding the keyword LENGTH
