Error description

  • Prior to COBOL 5+'s use of GOFF object output and program
    objects, the classical object and load module formats imposed a
    limit of 16M on executables, which LIST offsets were large
    enough to accommodate. With COBOL 5+ there's no longer a 16M
    limit, causing the offset to wrap back to zero at every 16M
    boundary.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.4 compiling *
    * programs with LIST or OFFSET where the *
    * combined size of the generated instructions *
    * and constant area is more than x'FFFFFF' *
    *                 bytes                                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Offsets larger than six hex digits *
    * wrap around (so x'1000000' is displayed *
    *                       as x'000000')                          *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF *
    ****************************************************************
    Offsets of instructions and the constant area are displayed in
    the listing as having only 6 hex digits.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to display offsets of instructions and
    the constant area with 8 hex digits when compiling with
    SOURCE(HEX)
