APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • File related structures set up and code generated by the
compiler for an LP(64) program are incorrect leading to the
structures only being initialized correctly the first time the
    program is called.

This can lead to various problems at runtime, such as abend
    SC03.

This does not affect LP(32) programs.

Local fix

  • In some contexts, the file use can be isolated in a separate
    module that's entered only once.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 compiling and *
    * running programs with the LP(64) option in *
    * effect where the programs contain file I/O *
    * operations and are also called more than *
    * once during the life of a run unit. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Runtime abend (typically SC03 or S0C4) *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF                   *
    ****************************************************************
Programs compiled with the LP(64) option require special
handling of the static initialization of various runtime-managed
file control block fields due to the fact that in such programs
the fields do not reside in the Writable Static Area (WSA), as
in programs compiled with the LP(32) option in effect. In some
cases, these initializations were being incorrectly performed
multiple times when a program is called multiple times during
the life of the run unit.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was updated to fix the problem of repeated static
initialization of file control block fields in programs compiled
with the LP(64) option in effect.
