Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL compiling *
    * programs that contain INSPECT TALLYING *
    * statements that have two tally strings, *
    * with the second string being longer than *
    *                 the first                                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: If matches of the first string are *
    * found in the last few positions of the *
    * string being searched, they won't be *
    *                      counted                                 *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF *
    ****************************************************************
    When tallying with two search strings, the generated
    instructions will stop searching when there are fewer
    unsearched characters than the length of the second string. If
    the first string is shorter, any remaining occurrences of the
    first string will be missed.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to search until the number of unsearched
    characters is shorter than both search strings, not just the
    second.
