Error description

  • The time to compile may increase when compiling with INITCHECK
    or NUMCHECK

Local fix

  • Compile with NOINITCHECK and NONUMCHECK

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 compiling *
    * programs with INITCHECK or NUMCHECK that *
    * have PERFORM statements that are recursive *
    * (that is, where a PERFORM statement causes *
    * itself to be executed, typically identified *
    * by an IGYCB7309-W message) or that use CICS *
    *                 exception handling.                          *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Compile time may be slow compared to *
    *                      COBOL 4.2, or to COBOL 6 using          *
    *                      NOINITCHECK,NONUMCHECK                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Fix the program so that PERFORM statements *
    * are not recursive,, or apply the provided *
    *                 PTF                                          *
    ****************************************************************
    The compiler does analysis for INITCHECK and NUMCHECK that uses
    the structure of PERFORM statements and PERFORMed paragraphs in
    the analysis. When analyzing programs with recursive PERFORM
    statements, the structure of a program with recursive PERFORMs
    can cause a majority of the program to be analyzed multiple
    times, leading to a slowdown in compilation time.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to avoid analyzing the recursive PERFORM
    statements, reducing the time required to compile programs with
    recursive PERFORM statements when using INITCHECK and NUMCHECK

Temporary fix
