Error description

  • The customer issues an EXEC CICS PERFORM SHUTDOWN from their own
transaction but the shutdown hangs. The joblog confirms that
CESD has ended all non-system tasks :

    03.00.24 JOB18746 +DFHCESD CICST22 SHUTDOWN ASSIST TRANSACTION
    CESD STARTING. SHUTDOWN IS NORMAL.
    ..
    03.00.57 JOB18746 +DFHTM1782I CICST22 All non-system tasks have
    been successfully terminated.

    This is followed by :

    03.01.03 JOB18746 +DFHZC2305I CICST22 Termination of VTAM
    sessions beginning

Several minutes later the region is still running so the
customer attempts to run their shutdown transaction again,

    but this fails :

    03.08.50 JOB18746 +DFHAC2007 05/01/2022 03:08:50 CICST22
Transaction xxxx cannot run as CICS shutdown is in progress.

and they eventually cancel the region.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All CICS users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: CICS hangs during normal shutdown when *
    * two attempts to issue CNOS to zero *
    *                      for a parallel LU6.2 connection fail    *
    *                      with SEND errors.                       *
    ****************************************************************
A CICS region specifies DFHSIT parameters TCSACTN=FORCE and
TCSWAIT with a numerical threshold value. These are set to
request that CICS terminal control takes action to forceclose
the CICS z/OS Communications Server ACB after the threshold time
    expires during normal shutdown.

During a normal shutdown, a request for CNOS (change number of
sessions) to zero is sent across a parallel LU6.2 connection and
an error response is returned with message DFHZC0161 and error
    code X'FBB1'.

DFHZC0161 date time applid CLS1 CNOS command for modename MNAME
to node NETNAME connection SYSID has failed with code X'FBB1'.

CICS retries the CNOS request but this SEND also fails with the
same message and error code. The failure to successfully
complete CNOS close processing prevents the TCSACTN=FORCE action
    from taking place.

    Additional keywords: ZC0161 MSGDFHZC0161

Problem conclusion

  • CICS is changed to allow the TCSACTN=FORCE action to go ahead
and forceclose the CICS z/OS Communications Server ACB if
a second attempt to complete CNOS close processing, for an LU62
parallel connection, returned a SEND error with message
    DFHZC0161 and code X'FBB1'.
