  * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.2 compiling and  *
  *                 running a program compiled with the NUMCHECK *
  *                 option where the program contains a SORT     *
  *                 statement specifying at least one sort       *
  *                 keypart that is of a type covered by the     *
  *                 NUMCHECK option in effect.                   *

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Runtime abend or message (depending on  *
  *                      NUMCHECK setting), with message text    *
  *                      such as:                                *
  *                                                              *
  *                      IGZ0279W The value X'0000' of data      *
  *                      item SORT-INST-NO at the time of        *
  *                      reference by statement number 1 on      *
  *                      line 97 in program PROBLM2 failed       *
  *                      the NUMERIC class test or               *
  *                      contained a value larger than the       *
  *                      PICTURE clause as detected              *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF.                  *
  ****************************************************************
  NUMCHECK checking was sometimes being inadvertently applied to
  sort keyparts during the setup of a sort when there was no valid
  data in the sort record.
  

Problem conclusion

• The compiler was updated to ensure that numchecking sort
  keyparts during the setup of a sort is never done.
