APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Code to sanitize the returned procedure-pointer mistakenly sets
    the target address portion of the procedure-pointer to NULL, and
    the second word to the address of the compiler temporary used to
    receive the returned procedure-pointer.

    A subsequent call using the procedure-pointer will branch to
    location zero.

Local fix

  • Use a function-pointer instead.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 compiling and *
    * running programs that contain a CALL *
    * statement with RETURNING phrase that *
    *                 specifies a receiver of USAGE                *
    *                 PROCEDURE-POINTER.                           *

    * which can result in a S0C1 abend when *
    *                      used in a CALL statement.               *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF.                  *
    ****************************************************************

    PROCEDURE-POINTER value returned from a program into a user's
    receiver data item.

Problem conclusion

    PROCEDURE-POINTER value returned from a program into a user's
    receiver data item.
