PH39528: A MOVE OF INVALID DATA FROM A SIGNED NUMERIC EDITED DATA ITEM TO AN UNSIGNED DATA ITEM GIVES AN UNEXPECTED RESULT

Error description

• Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.2 compiling and running programs
  that contain a MOVE statement that satisfies the following two
  conditions:
  1) the sender is a signed numeric-edited item that contains an
  invalid sign character;
  2) the receiver is an unsigned numeric or unsigned
  numeric-edited item.
  
  After the MOVE statement is executed, the receiver contains an
  unpredictable result.  The de-editing of the bad numeric-edited
  data item stops when the bad sign is found, leaving
  unpredictable data in the receiver.

  The COBOL program would stop de-editing the bad numeric-edited
  data item when it found the bad sign, leaving unpredictable
  data in the receiver.
  

Problem conclusion

• The compiler was updated so that when moving a signed
  numeric-edited item with an invalid sign character to an
  unsigned numeric or numeric-edited receiver, the move will
  continue even if the sign character is bad.
