Error description

  • SSL failed handshake with a BAD CERT error
    

Local fix

  • Setting com.ibm.websphere.security.useAllSSLClientAuthKeytypes
    to true on WebSphere seems to fix the issue.

    The WebSphere custom key manager is not looking at all key types
    when looking trying to match a client certificate.
    

Problem conclusion

  • Fix to the custom key manager to ensure it looks at all key type
    that come from the server side of the communication when client
    authentication is enabled.
    
    The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in fix pack
    8.5.5.20 and 9.0.5.9. For more information, see 'Recommended
