PH33299: WEBSPHERE APPLICATION SERVER WINDOWS SERVICE CONTINUES TO RUN WHEN WEBSPHERE ENDS UNEXPECTEDLY

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• If the WebSphere Application Server windows service is not
  defined to restart the java instance and the instance
  terminates unexpectedly, the service continues to run.
  When the user selects "stop" from Windows Services panel, an
  error message stating the service has stopped unexpectedly is
  displayed.

  If the WebSphere java instance terminates unexpectedly or the
  stop method does not invoke the WebSphere service to stop the
  java instance (ie, nodeagent scripts or GUI console), the
  service will not terminate when the server stops.
  

Problem conclusion

• Modified the code to close open resources when the java
  instance terminates and the service is not defined to restart
  the java instance. Further modified the code to notify windows
  service control handler that the service is stopping when the
  server terminates and is not being restarted.
  
  The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in fix pack
  8.5.5.20 and 9.0.5.7. For more information, see
