APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • An s0c1 exception may occur when a paragraph that is executed
as part of a PERFORM statement attempts to return to the
    statement following the PERFORM statement.

Local fix

  • Compile with OPT(1)

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V6.3 compiling *
    * programs at OPT(1|2) that contain two or *
    * more PERFORM UNTIL or PERFORM VARYING loops *
    * PERFORMing the same paragraph or section, *
    * where the PERFORM statements are the last *
    * statements in WHEN clauses of an EVALUATE *
    *                 statement.                                   *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Program abends with S0C1. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    ****************************************************************
The compiler incorrectly removed code that stored the address of
the next instruction following a PERFORM statement. At the end
of a paragraph or section that is PERFORMed, the program would
branch to an incorrect address, either jumping to the wrong
place in the program or outside of the program. Branching
outside the program could result in trying to execute code at
an invalid address, causing the S0C1.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to not remove code that stored the
address of the next instruction following a PERFORM statement.
