Error description

  • IBM Developer for System Z (IDz) provides users with the option
on whether they want to save or not save their last edits prior
    to closing the program.

When users choses â ˜Noâ ™ to saving the program, the â ˜File
Recoveredâ ™ message (with the last backup) will appears the
next time user open the program.

In normal circumstances, after the user choses â ˜Noâ ™, there

Local fix

Problem summary

  • If there is a dirty file when the user shuts down the workbench,
the user is prompted to either save the file or discard the
pending changes. When the workbench is restarted, if the user
has previously chosen to dischard the changes, the user will be
prompted if they would like to recover from a backup (as is the
workbench has been shut down unexpectedly.).

Problem conclusion

  • In the case when the workbench is shut down, there are various
scenarios we have to cover: normal shutdown vs system shutdown.
In a normal shutdown, if a file has unsaved changes, the
backup file should be deleted. In a system shutndown where
Eclipse does not have a chance to go through the proper shut
down sequence, a backup file is maintained, to ensure that the
user does not lose any unsaved changes. During these scenarios,
we are unable to reliably determine if Eclipse is being shut
down gracefully, or forcefully. As a result, a backup file is
left behind during a normal shutdown, and the user gets prompted
     to restore the file.
