APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Testing 64-bit mode, COBOL program receives a s0c4 at execution
    time on a SET ADDRESS statement.

Local fix

  • Compile and execute in 31-bit mode

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V6.3 compiling and *
    * running programs that set the addresses of *
    *                 the CVT-BLOCK and SMF-BLOCK to pointers in   *
    *                 AMODE64 (LP(64) compiler option was          *
    * specified during the compile). *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ABEND: Compiler fails with an S0C4 *
    * error at runtime on SET ADDRESS *
    * statement when attempting to set *
    *                      CVT-BLOCK and SMF-BLOCK to pointers.    *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF and recompile with *
    *                 affected pointers changed to pointer-32      *
    ****************************************************************
    Addresses of CVT-BLOCK AND SMF-BLOCK are fixed as 4-byte
    addresses by System Z architecture. Setting 8-byte pointers to
    these addresses fills the high word of the pointer with random
    values which results in the S0C4 ABEND.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was changed so that Pointer-32 data-items are used
    correctly to allow for proper set address statement behavior.

Temporary fix
