Error description

  • PRODUCT:
    5655EXP00 IBM EXPLORER FOR Z/OS (ZEXPL)
    reported level: IDz 9.5.1.4 -> 9.5.1.8
    tested with 9.5.1.8 & IDz 14.1.5.0 + ZEXPL 3.1.1.15

    ERROR DESCRIPTION:
    IBM Explorer for z/OS - zExpl
    Data set allocate like fails with
    IKJ56702I and IKJ56701I when a user attempts to allocate a data
    set like this:
    - from the Remote Systms view of z/OS Projects
      perspective, right click on MVS Files -> New -> Allocate
      (whatver the type)
    - give a name to this new data set -> Next
    - selects Copy characteristics from an existing
      data set an select an existing data set whose
      storage class is = **None** -> Next
    - push button System managed Storage
    - System Managed Storage window pops up and there
      is a dot in field Storage class -> OK
    - Finnish

    Allocation fails with
    IKJ56702I INVALID STORAGE CLASS, .
    IKJ56701I MISSING STORAGE CLASS+
    IKJ56701I MISSING VALUE MUST BE ALPHABETIC OR NATIONAL
    CHARACTERS OTHER
    THAN THE FIRST
    </FEKFTSO>
    RC=12

    If the model data set has a storage class, the storage class
    field is filled with this storage classe name and allocation
    runs fine

    LOCAL FIX:
    remove the dot "." from the field before OK

Local fix

  • remove the dot "." from the field before OK

Problem summary

  • When the storage class for a data set is **NONE** using the
    allocate like action fails.

Problem conclusion

  • The allocate like action fails because the client misinterprets
    a blank storage class associated with the source data set as '.'
     when it should be just blank.
