Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: WebSphere Application Server * * does not warn the user when product * * bundles fail to resolve when starting * * an application server. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When starting an application server, WebSphere Application Server (WAS) creates an instance of an OSGi framework and provisions the necessary product bundles into the framework before invoking the target server class. If one or more bundles do not fully provision due to OSGi resolution failures, the target server may start without issue and eventually exhibit unexpected runtime behaviors. These problems may be difficult to determine, since the cause and symptom may occur at much different times. To more quickly determine problems due to OSGi resolution failures, APAR PH05460 enables WAS to log warning WSVR0661W to the SystemOut.log and to generate a separate log containing resolution diagostics for all bundles installed in the OSGi framework instance underlying the server. For example, if a product bundle fails to resolve when starting server "myServer", the following warning will appear in the SystemOut.log: WSVR0661W: Some bundles failed to resolve during the myServer server startup. The server logged OSGi bundle diagnostics to the <profile_home>/servers/myServer/ configuration/diag-1559580083130.log file. If warning WSVR0661W appears, then you should stop the server, reset the server's OSGi bundle cache using the osgiCfgInit utility, and then restart the server. Resolution failures typically occur whenever a product bundle is updated and the server's OSGi bundle cache has not been reset (i.e. the cache is stale) or whenever the cache has corrupted for some unknown reason. The warning may be benign in some WebSphere products. However, if the warning persists and you are experiencing strange problems with that server, please save the resolution diagnostics log for problem determination in the event you consult IBM Support. Regarding the diagnostics, notice the log is named "diag-<timestamp>.log", where <timestamp> is the current time in milliseconds, and that log appears in the server configuration directory within the server's profile. Here's a snippet of what the log might contain: At least one bundle failed to resolve. Writing resolution diagnostics to file C:\<profile_home\servers\myServer\configuration\ diag-1559580083130.log BEGIN resolution diagnostics System Bundle [0] initial@reference:file:plugins/com.ibm.cds_2.1.0.jar [1] initial@reference:file:plugins/ com.ibm.ws.eclipse.adaptors_7.0.0.jar [2] initial@reference:file:plugins/ org.eclipse.equinox.common_.jar [3] ... websphere@plugins\com.ibm.ws.wsoc.jar [221] Direct constraints which are unresolved: Missing imported package com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.webappFailExample_0.0.0. ... websphere@plugins\wxdcg.jar [323] END resolution diagnostics
Problem conclusion
Apply APAR PH05460 to enable WebSphere Application Server to issue a warning and log resolution diagnostics for all bundles provisioned in the OSGi framework instance of an application server whenever one or more product bundles fail to resolve during startup. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 8.5.5.16 and 9.0.5.0.
