Error description

  • When a HOD 3270 session is closed by the client user, it does
not end the TN3270 connection on the remote host (z/OS system,
z/VM system, etc.). The connection stays in an established
state on the host. The entire HOD Desktop has to be closed in
order to end any of these established TN3270 connections on the
    host.

This behavior can be tested / recreated with HOD.html
in Internet Explorer, HODCached.html in Internet Explorer, and
the Java Web Start version of HOD.html (accessing the page in
Chrome and launching it with Java Web Start).

    Essentially
these TCPIP connections stay active on the host, thereby
keeping the LUs reserved on the z/OS host. This can exhaust the
LU pool on a given TN3270 port on the z/OS host if an end user
keeps their HOD Desktop open (an Internet Explorer session with
the HOD page open, or a Java Web Start HOD Desktop, etc.)
because they think they have closed all their HOD sessions but
the connections are remaining in an established state on the
host. This causes other users to be unable to even connect to
the z/OS host because there are no LUs remaining in the pool
    for that TN3270 port.
This issue has also a bearing on Managed
    HOD.

This issue is closely related with (if not identical to)
    APAR IT007723 .

    ****************************************************************
TCP/IP connections stay active on the host, thereby keeping the
LUs reserved and not available to other users. This can exhaust
the LU pool on a given TN3270 port on the z/OS host if an end
user keeps their HOD Desktop open because the connections
remain in an established state on the host.

Problem conclusion

  • Code changes have been made to disconnect the session from the
host once the session ends in the client workstation.
