APAR status

  • Closed as documentation error.

Error description

  • When 5 volumes are specified in a volume list, an S837-8 is
received rather than a S/B37-4. If 4 or 6 volumes are
specified, the expected S/B37-4 is received.

Local fix

  • BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION:
Increase the volume count or list additional volsers.

Problem conclusion

  • Message IEC028I will be updated to clarify differences between
    the ABENDs
Following Text replaces the 837-08 text.
    Proposed Text for IEC028I
    =========================
This condition can occur under the following conditions:
    - JFCB is full - exactly 5 Volumes coded.(JFCB can only hold 5
    Volume Serial Numbers)
    - JFCB and JFCB Extension(s) are full. Each Extension can hold
15 Volume Serial Numbers, so the
error will appear after 20,35,etc. Volumes are used.
    - This error can also occur if an OPEN TYPE=J macro is used to
open the data set after the Volume
Serial Number is changed and the JFCB is not updated in the
SWA because bit 4 of the JFCBTSDM field
of the JFCB is set to one.
    - If this error occurs while the system is reading a multivolume
tape data set and this abend message
is preceded by one of the following messages: IEC709I,
    IEC710I, IEC711I, or IEC712I, then the next
Volume Serial Numbers to process was provided via the LABAN
(Label Anomaly Tape Installation Exit) but
either this Volume Serial could not be enqueued or no JFCB
Extension is available to add the Volume.

Specify more Volume Serial Numbers, or a larger Volume Count in
    the VOL
parameter of the DD statement. See z/OS MVS JCL User's Guide for
a description of the rules for
    coding Volume Count.

It should be noted this error differs from IEC030I B37-04 as it
    indicates the JFCB and/or Extension(s)
are full verses the no space available on the current Volume(s).
