Error description
This apar will provide diagnostics to help determine why a UCB may remained pinned after a Vary offline by Catalog module IGG0CLE0. Often associated with IODF dynamic activate, the process involves a vary offline of volumes and the subsequent activation results in the following messages to the syslog: IOS500I ACTIVATE RESULTS 223 ACTIVATE FAILED - ERROR MESSAGE(S) ISSUED NOTE = 0100,SOFTWARE-ONLY CHANGE COMPID=SC1C3 REASON=0151,CAN NOT DELETE DEVICE D59B DESCTEXT=DEVICE PINNED, ASID = 0014 PINNED BY CATALOG MODULE IGG0CLE5 WHILE VVDS IS OPEN Catalog listens for ENF24 which is issued when any volume is varied offline. As part of this, it will uncapture and unpin the UCB. It is believed that in some cases, this unpin may be unsuccessful but is undetected in Catalog. As a result, the control blocks that would allow us to correct the situation with a F CATALOG,VCLOSE or VUNALLOCATE are unable to and a F CATALOG,RESTART is necessary to unpin the device. This code will provide the ability to verify an unsuccessful unpin. CATKEYS: CAT2014 CATDOC CATIODF
Local fix
F CATALOG,RESTART if F CATALOG,VCLOSE(volser) is unsuccessful
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: ALL USERS OF HDZ1C10 AND NEWER. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Primary complaint was two fold. 1) * * Catalog required a restart to remove a * * PIN on a volume which it held, which * * had caused an IODF activate failure. 2) * * The catalog modify command * * VCLOSE(<volser>) did not remove PIN or * * provide enough information. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** SUMMARY: Both the Catalog offline listener and the catalog modify command vclose were corrected to not lose Catalog's PIN TOKEN on UNPIN error. Additionally, the modify vclose command was enhanced to provide more information and diagnostics on failure.
Problem conclusion
Both the modify vclose catalog command and the catalog offline listener were modify not to lose the PIN TOKEN on UNPIN error. Vclose was enhanced for error output and diagnostics on error. "z/OS MVS System Messages, Vol 6 (GOS-IEA) SA38-0673-00" For message IDC3009I RETURN CODE 45. The following three reason codes will be added. Reason Code Description 4 Explanation: Catalog VVDS has not operated on the specified volume since IPL. Programmer Response: None. Message is informational only. 5 Explanation: Catalog VVDS has not operated on the specified volume under the currently running instance of Catalog. Programmer Response: None. Message is informational only. 6 Explanation: Catalog VVDS does not have the specified volume PINNED for operation. Programmer Response: None. Message is informational only. "z/OS MVS System Messages, Vol 7 (IEB-IEE) SA38-0674-00" IEC353I should have the following update. The bullet beginning with the following quoted text will add the sentence below following the quotes. "SERVICE proc RETURNED mm-rc-rsn -- An invoked catalog function returned a failing module ID, return code, and reason code." Return and reason code are described under message IDC3009I in z/OS MVS System Messges, Vol 6 (GOS-IEA). This is an informational message. The CATATLOG MODIFY command "catalog, vclose(<volser>)" may now on successful completion issue an additional message. For example: F catalog,vclose(1P0101) IEC351I CATALOG ADDRESS SPACE MODIFY COMMAND ACTIVE >> IEC353I SERVICE 'CLSV' RETURNED GC-045-004 IEC352I CATALOG ADDRESS SPACE MODIFY COMMAND COMPLETED The second IEC353I message designated by the ">>" is an existing message but will be new as described by the documentation above in this PTF. See Hold for DOC for description. There may appear 1 of 3 messages all of the same form, differing only the last number GC-045-00(4,5, or 6). Please evaluate if this PTF may affect any of your systems automation.
