IZ69574: INSTALL_ALL_UPDATES DOES NOT UPDATE RPM IMAGES APPLIES TO AIX 5300-08

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When we try to update rpm images using
  install_all_updates we get the message
  install_all_updates: No updatable rpm packages found.
  for example:
  On the system we have
  # rpm -qa
  cdrecord-1.9-4
  mkisofs-1.13-4
  AIX-rpm-5.3.7.0-1
  
  In the install directory we have
  # ls  /tmp/lpp/RPMS/ppc
  cdrecord-1.9-7.aix5.2.ppc.rpm
  mkisofs-1.13-4.aix4.3.ppc.rpm
  
  # install_all_updates -Ycrx -d /tmp/lpp
  install_all_updates: Initializing system parameters.
  install_all_updates: Log file is
  /var/adm/ras/install_all_
  updates.log
  install_all_updates: Checking for updated install
  utilities on media.
  install_all_updates: ATTENTION, no installp images were
  found on media.
  install_all_updates: Processing media.
  
  install_all_updates: Generating list of updatable rpm
  packages. install_all_updates: No updatable rpm packages
  found.
  

Local fix

• Manually install the rpm images using
  # rpm -Uvh <image>
  

Problem summary

• geninstall and install_all_updates may not update RPMs.
  

Problem conclusion

• Correctly compare the RPM package versions.
