IV85963: CRON JOBS SCHEDULED FOR DAY 30 OR 31 MAY RUN INCORRECTLY

APAR status

Error description

  • A job that is scheduled for a day that does not exist
    in a certain month may not get run as scheduled for
    the next month.
    
    Example:
    A job is scheduled for all odd days:
     1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,29,31
    On April 29th, the job will be run as expected. But
    it will not run again until May 31st, even though the
    next time it should run is May 1st.
    
    The key to this failure is that after the last valid
     day scheduled (April 29th in this case), there must be
    another day left in the month (April 30th.)
    The above example would experience a problem in February
    of a non-leap year, since after the job runs on the
    27th, there is still one more day left in February.
    But it would not be a problem in a leap year, since a
    job will run on Feb 29th, but then there are no more
    days left in February after that.
    

Local fix

  • Workaround:
    Schedule your cron jobs differently. For example,
    if you have a job that must run on the 31st, schedule
     it only for 31-day months rather than all months.
