Error description
Netcool/Impact supports integration with an Oracle RAC cluster. If you choose to connect to an Oracle RAC cluster, in the URL field, enter the URL, preceded by jdbc:oracle:thin:@. For example: jdbc:oracle:thin:@ (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host1)(PORT = port1)) (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host2)(PORT = port2)) (LOAD_BALANCE = yes) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = service-name) (FAILOVER_MODE =(TYPE = SELECT)(METHOD = BASIC)(RETRIES = 180)(DELAY = 5)) ) ) Link http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSSHYH_6.1.1/com.i bm.netcoolimpact.doc6.1.1/user/rac_cluster_support.html The above string generates the following type of errors: 01 Oct 2014 14:06:57,566 ERROR [JDBCVirtualConnectionWithFailBack] JDBC Connection Pool recieved error trying to connect to data source at : jdbc:oracle:thin:@[jdbc:oracle]:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PRO TOCOL=TC P)(HOST=il02nclrac7l01.pvt.com)(PORT=1521))(LOAD_BALANCE=yes)(CO NNECT_DA TA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=ncltst))) Note the additional string in Bold when jdbc:oracle:thin:@ is added to the custom URL portion when creating the data source. If you leave that out in your custom URL such as this: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=il02nclrac7l01.pvt.com )(PORT=1 521))(LOAD_BALANCE=yes)(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_ NAME=ncl tst))) It works (automatically appending the jdbc:oracle:thin@ statement This seems to occur in every version from 6.1.1 down. I haven't tested with 7.1.x
Local fix
Remove jdbc:thin:@ statement (which in the documents says is necessary)

If the user includes the following text: preceded by jdbc:oracle:thin:@, the connection does not work and an error is generated. If the text is removed then a successful connection is made. The documentation needs to be corrected to reflect this.
Problem conclusion
The text will be corrected in the next publication of Impact docs for releases 5.1.1 6.1 6.1.1 7.1
