Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus displays unresponsive symptoms due
to total memory consumption by virgo.service.

The memory consumption progressively increases in the
    virgo.service.

Initial symptom can be verified when the virgo.service display
high memory GB consumption, using command
    "systemctl status virgo".

There is no reduction in the memory consumption even during
the period of low SLA processing.

This symptom remains until all memory is consumed by Virgo
and IBM Storage Protect Plus become unresponsive.

Virgo service generates heapdump file in location
/data/logs/heapdump and need analisys by IBM Support.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.15.3 and later

Local fix

  • Reboot the IBM Storage Protect Plus appliance to release
    memory allocated by the virgo.service.

Problem conclusion

  • In IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.15.2 and later, some of the
created user sessions were not properly cleaned up, causing a
memory leak. This memory leak would eventually consume all of
the available memory, causing IBM Spectrum Protect Plus to
crash. In 10.1.16.1 and 10.1.17, this memory leak has been
    fixed.
