IT45639: EXCHANGE POINT-IN-TIME RESTORE CAN FAIL IF THERE IS NO LOG BACKUP BETWEEN LAST DATABASE BACKUP AND SPECIFIED "BY TIME"

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus takes Exchange database backup at
    time1. Before any log backup is run after time1, a point-in-time
    restore by specifying "by time" value after time1 can fail.
    
    
    If log backup is enabled, the job fails with error:
    CTGGA1622,[exchange-server] Failed to granular restore databases
    (exchange-db) on server (exchange-server) (Could not find a part
    of the path '\\vsnap-server\vpoolx_fsxx\<exchange-db>\<exchagne
    -server>_<exchange-db>\backup.xml'.).
    
    
    If log backup is not enabled, the job fails with error:
    CTGGA1608,[exchange-server] Failed to restore databases
    (exchange-db) on server (exchange-server) (Object reference not
    set to an instance of an object.). The specified databases on
    the specified server failed to restore.

Local fix

  • Use snapshot restore instead of point-in-time restore as it
    restores database backup directly without looking for log
    backups.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem has been fixed so that point-in-time restore is
