Error description

  • The IBM Storage Protect Plus appliance GUI can become
unresponsive and GUI login attempts fail when the virgo service
    is down.
This APAR applies when the following two conditions are met :
    1. The cause of the virgo service crash is an out of memory
condition as seen in the output of the command 'sudo systemctl
    status virgo -l':
      ...startup.sh[8821]: Exception: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread
    "DefaultQuartzScheduler_Worker-9"
      ...startup.sh[8821]: Exception: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread
    "DefaultQuartzScheduler_Worker-7"
    AND
    2. Copy to Azure cloud is used

The frequency of the memory full condition depends on the
available system memory and copy to cloud workload.
Adding more memory to the appliance or decreasing the copy to
cloud workload will allow for more uptime for the appliance
    between crashes.

IBM Storage Protect Plus Versions Affected:
IBM Storage Protect Plus 10.1.9 and later

Additional Keywords: SPP, SPPlus, TS011682910, offload, memory,
    leak, crash, AZURE

Local fix

  • Restart the IBM Storage Protect Plus appliance.

Problem conclusion

  • Before IBM Spectrum Protect Plus level 10.1.15.1, there was a
known memory leak when performing a cloud offload, such as an
Azure offload. This memory leak would cause memory to accumulate
over time as more cloud offload jobs were run, eventually
causing the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus appliance to crash from
memory exhaustion. The memory leak has been fixed since IBM
Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.15.1 and later, which resolves the
    memory exhaustion crash.
