Error description

  • During system state backup, if the user id such as Local System
does not have access to part of the system state directories,
the backup can generate messages similar to this:

ANS0361I DIAG: psIsHardLink(): Failed to get link information
    for file <\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy83\Wind
    ows\WinSxS\further\directory\and\file.rc is 5
ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
IBM Spectrum Protect function name : IsBackupGroupNeededNew
IBM Spectrum Protect function : objEnumGetNextObj()
    failed.
IBM Spectrum Protect return code : 106
      IBM Spectrum Protect file :
    ..\..\common\winnt\psincrsubs.cpp (2537)

Running the following command on the Windows system from an
Administrator command line will show this is a hardlink:

    fsutil hardlink list

When we encounter this issue, the object enunumeration will
fail, incorrectly passing an incomplete backup list,
causing the system state backup to be incomplete. This leads to
the potential of being unable to restore
the system state backup in the event of a full system restore.

    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    All 8.1 clients on Windows

Local fix

  • For the scheduled backup, use an Admin id that has full access
    to the system state directories

Problem conclusion

  • Successful backup of Microsoft Windows system state requires an
Administrator account that can access all of the files that
comprise the system state. If the local system account is used
for scheduled backups, then the local system account must
likewise have access to all of the files that comprise the
system state. The fix for this APAR does not change the
requirement. However, after applying the fix for this APAR, if
an "access denied" error occurs during system state backup, then
    the following behaviors occur:

    * The backup-archive client logs message "ANS4998E Link
information for file 'file_name' could not be obtained: access
    to the object is denied."

    * The system state backup ends with return code 12, which
    indicates a "failed" status.
