APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The IBM Spectrum Protect Client File Restore WebGUI fails to
    load if the tdp (tdpvmware Linux) user lacks read permissions
    against "/var/log", however the messages.log file contains the
    following exception:
    
    [<timestamp>] 0000005b org.apache.wink.server.internal.

    E An unhandled exception occurred which will be propagated
     to the container.
    [<timestamp>] 0000005b com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.util.
    ApplicationErrorUtils
    E SRVE0777E: Exception thrown by application class
     'com.ibm.flr.rest.api.BaClientResource.loadCADServices:298'
     java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.flr.rest.api.
     BaClientResource.loadCADServices(BaClientResource.java:298)
    
    These message do not indicate the cause to be the user having
    insufficient access to read files in directory /var/log.
    
    With this APAR, a new exception message will be introduced to
    indicate the insufficient access issue.
    
    Also, IBM Spectrum protect Client File Restore WebGUI
    documentation will mention the needed permissions for
    "/var/log".

Local fix

  • Ensure sufficient access is given to the user to read files in
    /var/log:
    chmod 755 /var/log

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Web GUI now lag error message that there is
    no access to the directory "/var/log"
