Error description
A virtual machine (VM) restore using IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V does not progress. When listing open sessions for the affected node, one session is waiting for a sequential tape volume which is in use by another session for the affected node. Both sessions have spent about an equal time in the IdleW and in the MediaW state. The output of a server's Query Session Format=Detail command will include information similar to the following: Sess Sess Wait Media Access Status Number State Time ------ ------ ------ --------------------------------------- nn,nn1 IdleW 4.9 H Current input volumes: VOLUME1,(17751 Seconds) nn,nn2 MediaW 4.9 H Waiting for input volume(s): VOLUME1,(17734 Seconds) In the example above sessions nnnn1 and nnnn2 are open for the same node. When the wait time of the first session (nnnn1) reaches the value of the server's IDLETimeout option, the first session will be forced to close and the second session can continue reading from the volume. The restore process can then complete. ======================= Affected product versions: IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V versions 7.1 and 8.1 on all supported Windows platforms ======================= Additional Keywords: TS005787317 tsm hyperv tdpve tape vtl library hung
Local fix
Temporarily lower the server option IDLETimeout.

Problem conclusion
Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V use multiple sessions with server to restore virtual machine. When virtual machine is stored on a sequential tape volume client can run into situation when one session is waiting for a sequential tape volume which is in use by another session for the affected node. The code has been modified to avoid getting into such locks
