IT39227: VMWARE VM BACKUPS FAIL WITH ANS4174E RC=7336 AND ANS9447E

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When configuring the backups of virtual machines by directly
  connecting to the ESXi host, the backups can fail with the
  following messages seen in the data mover node error log:
  timestamp ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine
  'VMname' failed with RC=7336 mode=Incremental Forever - Full,
  target node name='DataCenterNode', data mover node
  name='DataMoverNode'
  timestamp ANS1228E Sending of object 'VMname' failed.
  timestamp ANS9447E The virtual machine 'VMname' disk could not
  be opened because none of the allowed transports is available.
   
  The root cause of this issue is that the Backup-Archive Client
  uses an incorrect thumbprint. The client service trace will show
  the messages like below:

  As seen from the above, the symbols of "--" at the end of the
  thumbprint are incorrectly parsed as "::" by the Backup-Archive
  Client.
   
  This issue occurs only when the following conditions are true:
  1. VM backups are performed by directly connecting to ESXi host.
  
  2. The ESXi host is at Version 7.0 Update 3.
  

Local fix

• Connect to vCenter server instead of ESXi host for backing up
  the VMs which are managed
  
  on the ESXi host 7.0 U3.

Problem conclusion

• The backups will work if VMs are managed on the ESXi host with
  version 7.0.
