Error description

  • SQL availability database may be offline during SQL backup,
because VDS start/rescan and new iscsi LUN discovery may cause
hang when there are parallel jobs.

Windows event log may report the following messages:

SQL Server hosting availability group '<availability_group>' did
not receive a process event signal from the Windows Server
Failover Cluster within the lease timeout period.
    Error: 19407, Severity: 16, State: 1.
The lease between availability group '<availability_group>' and
the Windows Server Failover Cluster has expired. A connectivity
issue occurred between the instance of SQL Server and the
Windows Server Failover Cluster. To determine whether the
availability group is failing over correctly, check the
corresponding availability group re ... log, Windows Server
Failover Clustering (WSFC) management console, or WSFC log.
The availability group database "<availability_database>" is
changing roles from "PRIMARY" to "RESOLVING" because the
mirroring session or availability group failed over due to role
synchronization. This is an informational message only. No user
    action is required.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.2 -> 10.1.8

    Initial Impact: Low

Additional Keywords: SPP, SPPlus, TS005154179 VDS SMP Alwayson
    Server Hang

Local fix

  • Stagger SQL backup and VM backup

Problem conclusion

  • Logs were indicating that the cluster resource failover and
database freeze was happening during VDS API call. Changed VDS
API calls to newer storage management APIs that does not cause
    this cluster resource fail over.
