Error description

  • Microsoft Exchange DAG and Microsoft SQL AAG force a base backup
due to missing metadata information after failover, even when
there is a prior base backup before the failover. Windows
application event viewer log shows following message for
Exchange database full backup as an example:

Information <date-time> MSExchangeRepl 2090 Action "Database:
    <exchange-db>\<exchange-server>Mailbox server: <exchange-server
host> A failover or switchover occurred. Database
<exchange-db>\<exchange-server> will be mounted with no data
    loss."

Information <date-time> MSExchangeRepl 2110 Exchange VSS Writer
The Microsoft Exchange VSS Writer instance
    xxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx has successfully prepared
for a full or a copy backup of database '<exchange-db>'. The
following database will be backed up: <exchange-db>.

    Sample steps are as following:

    1. AG1 runs as base backup
    2. AG1 runs as incremental backup
    3. AG2 runs as base backup
    4. AG2 runs as incremental backup
    5. AG1 is a forced base backup

Problem conclusion

  • Fixed an issue with processing metadata associated with the
source volumes for the databases. After applying the fix a fail
over will not cause a base backup when an incremental backup is
    possible.
