IT37872: WITH THE FIX FOR APAR IT37049 INSTALLED VMWARE VM IFINCR BACKUPS CONTINUE TO FAIL WITH ANS9921E AND ANS9919E

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• After applying the fix for APAR IT37049 incremental-forever
  incremental (ifincr) backups of VMware virtual machines (VMs)
  continue to fail with:
  
  (dsmerror.log)
  
  ANS9921E Virtual machine disk, VM_NAME (Hard Disk x),
  verification check failed (nnnnn/mmmmm). If the disk is on an
  NFS datastore and the disk size was recently changed or the
  disk was moved from non-NFS datastore to NFS datastore, the
  verification failure is expected and a full backup is required.
  
  
  ANS9919E Failed to find the expected control files for VM_NAME.
  
  ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine 'VM_NAME'
  failed with RC=7327 mode=Incremental Forever - Incremental,
  target node name='DAT_CENTER_NODE_NAME', data mover node
  name='DATA_MOVER_NODE_NAME'
  
  An incremental-forever full (iffull) backup is then needed to
  create a valid backup of the affected VM.
  But the same VM will again be affected during subsequent
  ifincr backups.
  Iffull backups can lead to exceeded backup windows,
  increased utilization of network and storage resources, and
  impact to other non-backup workload.

Local fix

• Disable CTL verification by setting the Client option
  VMVERIFYIFlatest to NO.
  
  Note: VMVERIFYIFlatest is a high-level "integrity check" of
  CTL and bitmap file, but it does not do a deep scan of backup
  data. It offers some level of validation, but VMVERIFYIFLATEST
  is not intended to replace normal DR testing, such as full VM
  restore tests, file restore tests, instant access tests, and
  verifying that applications in the VM are working properly.
