IT37476: VADP PROXY NOT RELEASED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE RESTORE FOR A VIRTUAL MACHINE IS COMPLETED

Error description

  • During an IBM Spectrum Protect Plus restore job, the VADP proxy
    is not released immediately after the restore for a virtual
    machine is completed. This can become a problem when a restore
    job contains multiple virtual machines and some need to wait for
    a VADP proxy to become available after the softcap task limit is
    reached, which can cause the restore job hang indefinitely with
    the following messages seen in the restore job log:
    
    WARN,timestamp,2,CTGGA0682,VM VMNAME1 is waiting for proxy. All
    proxies for site A are being fully utilized. Data streams in
    use: 4  site limit set: 4. Retrying in 30 seconds.
    WARN,timestamp,2,CTGGA0682,VM VMNAME2 is waiting for proxy. All
    proxies for site A are being fully utilized. Data streams in
    use: 4  site limit set: 4. Retrying in 30 seconds.
    WARN,timestamp,2,CTGGA0682,VM VMNAME3 is waiting for proxy. All
    proxies for site A are being fully utilized. Data streams in

Local fix

  • Use either of the following options:
    1. Set a higher value for the "Softcap task limit" option if
    possible. This will assign more CPU cores to VADP proxy to
    handle the restore.
    2. Create one restore job for each virtual machine if multiple
    ones are needed to restore.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem has been fixed so that after streaming restore is
    done for a VM, proxy is immediately released for next VM to use.
