Error description
Restoring an Oracle database with IBM Spectrum Protect Plus fails with the following error indicating the database cannot be opened because one or more files are inconsistent. DBNAME: alter database open resetlogs; DBNAME: ORA-01194: file <n> needs more recovery to be consistent CTGGF0156, Database DBNAME: Restore failed: Failed to open database The failure occurs due to missing logs in the data volume because they were truncated after being copied to the log volume. It occurs when all the following conditions are met: - Log backup was enabled for the database and the option to truncate logs immediately after backup was selected - The schedules were configured in a way that a log backup operation occurred while the regular SLA backup was running. - The restore is a non-PIT restore that is, it is configured to restore a specific backup, not an intermediate point in time. For example, if the SLA backup runs for 30 minutes and a log backup also runs during this time, the log backup can truncate some logs immediately. When the SLA backup completes, it tries to create another backup copy of the archived logs generated during the 30-minute window. Some of the logs, which were already truncated are not captured again. During non-PIT restore, SPP uses only the logs stored in the backup volume that is missing some of the necessary logs. Problem conclusion
The issue was caused by log backup task purging source logs while database backup in progress. Changes where made to skip source log truncation if databases backup is in progress. Restore job from backups created after applying the fix can be restored without ORA-01194 error.
